Barkin Bacon Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

I bet you didn’t know that April was National Grilled Cheese month, did you?  Well, your dog does and it’s marked on their calendar.  So you need to head to the kitchen.  Nuff, I mean ruff said.

Many may ask, “Hey, is cheese good for dogs?”  Great question. Some dogs, just like their humans may be lactose intolerant.  Solution?  Find a cheese low in lactose, or with no lactose.  We ruv Cabot Creamery Cooperative Cheese for their naturally lactose-free cheese.  And generally speaking, the longer a cheese is aged, and the harder it is, the less lactose.  Yes, these sandwiches are meant as a treat, but not a meal replacement.  But for the humans, go ahead and indulge with your dog!  This recipe is great for the whole family!  You can make up your own, or follow any of our three options below. Although I probably wouldn’t put peanut butter on my grilled cheese.  Or would I….

Barkin Bacon Grilled Cheese Sandwiches For Dogs

Coconut or Olive Oil Spray

2 Bread Slices Of Your Choice (wheat, rye, or any gluten-free or no sodium option)

2 Slices or Shredded Cabot Cheddar Cheese or Cabot Mozzarella Cheese

1 slice or 2, your dog can decide, of low-sodium turkey bacon

1 tablespoon sugar free applesauce

Additional dog safe fruits or veggies of your dog’s choice (strawberries, blueberries, apple slices, cooked broccoli, cooked sweet potato, cooked green beans, etc)

You can also add low fat, no salt peanut butter or shredded coconut

Customize your dog’s sandwich! Have fun with it!

Directions:

Assemble your Barkin Bacon Grilled Cheese Sandwich.  Be sure and let anything you drop on the floor be cleaned up by your dog.

Spray a non-stick pan or skillet liberally with coconut or olive oil spray.  Heat pan to medium-low heat.

Press the sandwich slightly and place it in the skillet.  Cook until golden brown on the bottom, 3 to 5 minutes.

Flip, adding more oil to the pan if needed, and cook until the other side is golden brown and the cheese melts, 3 to 5 more minutes.

Cut into bite size pieces and let cool completely before serving.
