The blue-flowering flax plant in the northern hemisphere is grown primarily in the northern United States and Canada. It has tiny brown or gold seeds that have a distinctive, nutty flavor. But can and should you add this delectable ingredient to your dog’s diet?
Because flax is such a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, it can be a great addition to a dog’s diet! What are some additional benefits?
- Three tablespoons of flaxseed oil have as much omega-3 fatty acids as one pound of fish. There are 10 grams of protein to be found, plus half of one’s daily requirement for fiber.
- Flaxseed can make your dog’s coat softer and shinier. This is again because of the omega-3 fatty acids. Adding just a little of the ground flax seed to your dog’s diet can go a long way to giving him or her that healthy glow. It also protects the skin beneath the coat!
- Most commercial pet foods are low in omega-3 fatty acids and because most people are still turning to expensive fish oils, flaxseeds are a reliable and affordable alternative.
- Flaxseed also has cardiovascular benefits. If your dog has heart issues, flax in the form of seed or oil, is a good thing. A very good thing!
As you know, Your Dog’s Diner advocates that dogs need real food to flourish. We are proud that our new Pizza Pawty Treats contain flaxseed!
